A Bad Case of the Stripes

Hello Friends! We are working our way out of the second month of school and it has been a whirlwind! I have moved from first to second grade, changed schools, and abilities of students. I love my new school and my kids, but let’s be honest moving is hard work! If you see a lull in the blog, that is why. My new kiddos are my TOP priority, however I still want to share with you what I am doing. It may just be behind by a few weeks. (Halloween in December, anyone?!?!) ๐Ÿ˜‰ Meanwhile, you can follow my journey on Instagram @theelementarydarling.

So, I decided to bring back an oldie that I loved using in first grade, A Bad Case of Stripes. There are so many great things about this book. An interesting character, teaching students to be themselves, sequencing, and so many more!

Last year, I had a little more time to create anchor charts and cute things for my classroom.  Here is the first grade anchor chart I made.

This year, my second graders needed to know sequencing and the 5w’s. My kids LOVED the book this year,m however I have had no time to make my anchor chart “pin-worthy” and that is ok! The students told me what to write this year and they learned just as much from this anchor chart as the students did last year.
Day one, we worked on reading the book, discussing the details, and creating this chart. Day two we reviewed the details. Then they completed the 5w worksheet. They really worked hard on this because they knew that they were going to get to color their faces and that I wanted to display them in the hallway for everyone to enjoy!
They turned out so cute!

So then I took the students’ pictures, wrote their names on card stock and printed the pictures in black and white. The kids LOVED coloring their faces, and they all colored differently. I glued them on different color construction paper to make them pop.
Have you read this book? What activities do you do with it? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments! If you would like to do this activity with your kiddos just click the pictures below and download it for free! Happy September!

Some good ideas for the paper craft and moreover they are the best way to teach children some good stories. The first one with the central cloud and table is the perfect one.
